The Soy Wax Candle Journey at Essence of Wellbeing
Soy Wax has recently become the "Buzz Word" in the candle world. Soy Wax Candles or Soy Candles have popped up everywhere - in stores, market stalls and on the internet. Network marketing companies have also jumped on board, enabling many small scale candle makers to step into the industry.
Soy wax is promoted as being natural, better for our health, better for the environment and more.
It's true that natural soy wax, produced by hydrogenation of the oil extracted from soy beans, is an environmentally friendly, cleaner-burning, renewable resource. But I had to ask myself just how natural were a great many of the candles being sold under this banner. After all many if not most of them seemed to include synthetic colours and harsh synthetic fragrances (which smell particularly bad to anyone who is used to working with beautiful natural essential oils everyday!)
So I began to do some research. And these are some of things I found out.
Soy wax is a relatively new product having been created only during the 1990's. It was created as a natural alternative to paraffin wax. There have always been other natural wax alternatives, notably beeswax. But beeswax is considerably more expensive than soy wax, so is much more of a luxury product. Other natural alternatives include palm wax, which has also been touted as a sustainable resource. But more recently the plight of the orang-utans and the fact that their habitat is being destroyed to make way for palm oil/wax plantations makes this claim somewhat doubtful.
So soy wax does seem to be a great new product. But how to keep it truly all natural? Was it really necessary to add colour and synthetic fragrance? Could you make soy wax candles that really were 100% natural?
Well after much work I can say the answer is yes. And the Essence of Wellbeing soy wax candle range is the result. These candles are made from natural soy wax and pure essential oils with cotton wicks. No synthetics. Some have a tint of colour from the essential oils used, but none contain added colour. And they are just beautiful. I was told people wouldn't like candles without colour. But I found people are considerably more discriminating than that! They appreciate the subtle colours of the natural wax, and the fresh delicious fragrances of the essential oils.
Our Soy Wax Candles all come in elegant lidded glass jars and are of a generous size with a burn time of over 40 hours.
hey currently come in 4 fragrances - Lavender (with pure French Lavender essential oil), Citrus (with sweet orange, lemon and grapefruit essential oils), Eucalyptus (with Eucalyptus radiata essential oil) and Patchouli and Lime (containing patchouli and cold-pressed lime essential oils).
